Why the Texarkana Promise Matters

High school students in our region are earning more college credit than ever before, showing they are ready for college-level work. The Texarkana Promise builds on that momentum by creating opportunities for eligible high school graduates to continue their education immediately after graduation and complete a degree.

For students transitioning from high school to college, the Promise helps make higher education a realistic and achievable next step.

How the Texarkana Promise Works

The Texarkana Promise offers a structured pathway for eligible students enrolling in college immediately after high school:

  1. Start at Texarkana College with the Texarkana College Promise, providing the opportunity to earn an associate degree or up to 60 credit hours with tuition support.
  2. Continue at Texas A&M University–Texarkana through the TAMUT Commitment, creating an opportunity for eligible transfer students to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

Each institution administers its portion of the Promise, while working together to support students through the transition from high school to college and beyond.

Start in High School

Through dual credit, eligible high school students can start earning college coursework while still in high school. Beginning in fall 2026, the Promise helps remove financial barriers by covering eligible dual credit course fees not funded through the state, making early college access more attainable for students across the region.

For students, this means the opportunity to build college momentum early, gain confidence in college-level coursework, and reduce the time and cost required to complete a credential after graduation.

By starting with dual credit, students can take their first steps into higher education while still in high school, setting a strong foundation for continued study.
